Nakalungi Sarah Aziz the Chief Administrative-CAO Hoima District has urged all stakeholders and the general population to embrace the five day’s vaccination campaign against Measles Rubella.
The ministry of health is set to conduct a country-wide five-day Measles-Rubella immunisation campaign from Thursday 1st to Monday 5th, October 2026.
While speaking to the media on Tuesday afternoon, Nakalungi said the district is currently mobilizing several stakeholders to ensure that the campaign achieves its targets in the district.
Dr Lawrance Tumusiime the Acting District Health Officer, Hoima says the district has already trained key stakeholders in the implementation of the vaccination campaign including teachers, local leaders, health workers and sub county supervisors.
Nakalungi has commended the government for considering Hoima District for projects under the AFCON 2027 preparations like the ongoing upgrading of Buseruka Health Center Three to a community hospital status in Buseruka Sub County and the two projects under Uganda Secondary Education Expansion Project-USEEP where Kitoba and Buseruka sub counties have benefited. She has also commended the Ministry of Local government for overseeing the implementation of programs like the National Oil Seeds Proejcts-NOSP which has helped improve on local road network and connectivity of farming communities.
Dr Lawrence says the upgrading of Buseruka Health Center Three to a community hospital will be a big boost to provision of health services to the community.
Measles is one of the most contagious diseases known to affect children, yet it is also one of the most preventable through vaccination.
The recent analysis by the Uganda National Institute of Public Health shows that the measles problem did not begin in 2026 but that outbreaks have persisted between 2020 and 2025, with 3,192 cases reported during the six-year period. Even more concerning, reported cases rose sharply to 1,967 in 2025, compared with just 48 in 2021.The geographical spread is equally concerning showing that between 2020 and 2025, 115 of Uganda’s 146 districts, 78.8% reported at least one confirmed measles outbreak. In 2025 alone, 46 districts reported outbreaks.
By April 2026, the Ministry of Health reported that 20 districts were experiencing measles outbreaks, with 12 deaths recorded during the year at that point. The affected districts included areas in different regions of the country, demonstrating that this is not simply a localised problem.
