Hoima district steps up Vaccination against Goat’s Plague disease(PPR)

Hoima district local government has stepped up vaccination against goat’s plague also known as Peste des Petitis Ruminants-PPR a highly contagious disease that affects goats and sheep.

According to Hoima district Veterinary Officer-DVO Dr Ndorwa Patrick, during the routine vaccination exercise in Mid June 2025, some goats were found to be exhibiting some signs and symptoms including difficulties in breathing, sneezing and fever in a farm of one Fred Tumwine in Kasenyi-Lyato village in Nyakabingo parish, Buseruka sub county. About 15 goats died. The Hoima district veterinary personnel intervened and samples from the dead animals were forwarded for analytical tests to the National Animal Diagnostic and Epidemiology Center-NADDEC in Kampala which tested positive for Peste des Petitis Ruminants-PPR.

He adds that the district swung in action and stepped up ring vaccination in Buseruka and other areas to cub down the spread of the plague. He says that since late June 2025, no new cases of either dead or spread of the infection have been reported. He has disputed the media reports of death of animals in hundreds in Hoima saying that the reports lack facts and correct data.

In April, the ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industries and Fisheries provided Hoima district with

3000 dosages of PPR vaccines and 10,000 dosages of Foot and Mouth Disease-FMD vaccines.

Dr Ndorwa says through use of combined PPR and Goat Pox Vaccines, over 3000 goats have been vaccinated.

He says there is no cause for alarm or panic among the farmers and consumers since the situation is under control. He urges farmers to embrace vaccination of their animals timely.

The Hoima District Chief Administrative Officer Emmanuel Ssempala says the district will continue to carry out surveillance and   monitoring of the situation while amplifying the ongoing vaccination exercise.
