Education Commissioner Calls For Consorted Efforts to Combat Absenteeism in Schools.

The Assistant Commissioner for primary education in the ministry of education and sports Ikwap Robert has called for the rise up of all stakeholders in combatting absenteeism, a vice which he says is responsible for the dwindling of education levels in local governments.

Ikwap made the call on Thursday 17 August 2025, while speaking to head teachers, education department officials and local leaders during the Hoima district local government stakeholders dialogue on education at Hoima Youth Center.

Ikwap said that absenteeism of both learners and teachers has retarded government’s efforts to improve on education levels.

He urged school heads to not only be accountable to funds but also consider accounting for their actions by delivering accordingly.

The Hoima CAO who was represented by the Principal Assistant Secretary Evelyne K Businge warned head teachers against laxity and failure to concentrate on result oriented performance.Businge said whereas there might be other challenges, teachers should look out for the strength and opportunities to improve on school performance and fight against school drop out.

The Hoima district education officer Harriet Kihumuro said Hoima district is still faced with high level of school drop out rate which she has attributed to failure to implement school feeding policy and negative attitude to education by parents.

The Hoima district LCV Vice Chairperson Hellen Mulumba has urged the government to consider the welfare of teachers in order to boost their morale.

The Hoima Deputy RDC Aine Christopher said that failure to educate children is equivalent to poisoning of the entire generation.He has called for change in attitude and actions by all stakeholders to ensure that absenteeism by both learners and teachers is curbed down.

The education and sports ministry has committed to boosting efforts in support supervision to local governments in areas of education.
